A Multilingual Analysis of the Narratives Across European Media Systems

This paper aims at analysing how the recent rise to power of ultra-right populism in Europe – particularly in Andalusia, Spain – was framed in news from different countries. Our starting point lies on the opinion that academia must heed the call made by Umberto Eco instilling to be vigilant about any arising form of fascism (1995). In order to achieve this goal, we analyse the news about the recent results of regional elections in Andalusia published in Spanish, French, German, Italian and British journals. The events that provide this work with a backbone took place on January 16th, 2019 when, for the very first time since the last democratic period in Spain, the ultra-right-wing party, Vox, obtained a representation in the Andalusian Parliament. Furthermore, we are interested in how the media from the above-mentioned countries framed the inauguration of this new government, which originated numerous feminist demonstrations throughout Spain. News corpora including the above-mentioned target languages have been compiled so as to be subsequently analysed with different approaches. Firstly, the ideological profile and the publication type have been identified, as well as the newspaper section and the relevant images which were included in each of them. Secondly, a linguistic and a socio-narrative analyses have been made in order to determine how the main constructs of this study were framed: the recent burst of populism in Spain and Europe, its gender implications and the political and ideological spectrum associated with these populist parties. The future research paths of this study emanate from the virtues of these multilingual corpora as a documentary tool throughout translation and interpreting processes, as well as a tractable means to identify the framing of populist and misogynous narratives from other fields of study such as the political sciences, sociology, media studies, among others.
